Cambodia: the Angkor complex @ Siem Reap Part 1

We traveled from Phnom Phen to Siem Reap and found accommodation, the Yellow Guesthouse.

The Angkor complex, famous for its largest Temple (Wat), is actually a park with many Temples and other ruins.

In the first two days, we visited the main Angkor temple multiple times, as well as looking at most of the surrounding temples. This post is our first morning at Angkor.

SANY4129

This is the taxi that we hired for showing us around the complex. His trailer has both city and temple complex maps mounted on the front for easy discussion of where to go.

SANY4146

We got 3 day passes valid for the whole complex. This is the first part of the complex that we got close to.

SANY4145

It was a main gate, lined with statues.

SANY4158

The area that the complex resides is mainly open wood forest and moats. The locals are free to visit anywhere in the complex.

SANY4215

Some tourists take the more relaxed tour on an elephant.

SANY4155

We got to our first stop for the day, and our taxi driver parked up and waited while we explored.

SANY4161

Our first stop was to Bayon temple.

SANY4171

Built in the late 12th century or early 13th century, it is an amazing sight.

SANY4170

The temples are still sacred, and so Buddha is still adorned with cloth and incense burned.

SANY4208

The temple has lots of these towers with faces.

SANY4209

A close up on a well preserved face.

SANY4168

The temple has lots of amazing carving.

SANY4207

Some carvings are very deep relief.

SANY4191

Toolman looking like a goon.

SANY4212

Most of the site was accessable, with lots of interesting stairs and corridors.

SANY4183

Princess exploring a corridor.

SANY4195

Toolman with the pillars.

SANY4186

Parts of the Temple looked like the end-game of Jenga.

SANY4176

Some of the walls are just a neat way to stack the pieces - they are not in the correct configuration.

SANY4178

A close up of that wall.

SANY4166

Carving is on so much of the stone, even the unused pieces.

SANY4162

Its like the worlds hardest jigsaw, but archeoligists are restoring as much as possible.

SANY4216

Another moat outside the Temple.

SANY4219

Her is a nice picture of Princess inspecting a young girls trinkets for sale.

SANY4221

We headed next door to the Baphuon Temple.

SANY4222

This 11th century Temple was build on sand, and has lots of unstable and collapsed parts.

SANY4224

There is active restoration on this site, and much is inacessable.

SANY4226

Princess surveys the rock sorting.

SANY4227

Each stone is ID tagged.

SANY4238

Toolman at the Terrace of Elephants.

SANY4239

The terrace has carvings all along it.

SANY4236

The elephants are backed up by these monkey-bird monsters.

SANY4246

We wandered on to its neighbor, the Phimeanakas - the Celestial Temple.

SANY4262

The Temple is guarded by Lion-like gargoyles.

SANY4249

Those stairs are very steep, the warning sign isn't joking.

SANY4247

Toolman poses at the bottom...

SANY4245

.. and the top!

SANY4251

Temple has lots of windows looking out.

SANY4260

A nice view over the area.

SANY4255

Toolman climbed right to the top.

SANY4256

Rock on!

SANY4266

Continued exploring the area.

SANY4274

Engraved walls are everywhere.

SANY4284

This is the entrance outside Preah Palilay.

SANY4283

Princess gives it Jazz hands.

SANY4295

This Temple is known for its steep chimney-shaped tower.

SANY4292

Toolman shows the scale of the trees!

SANY4303

We also went past Preah Pithu, a group of 5 temples.

SANY4308

This temple had intricate carvings insode the room at the top.

SANY4309

Princess leads the way to the next site.

SANY4323

Prasat Sour Prat is the name for the 12 towers here that oppose the Terrace of the Elephants.

SANY4320

Their exact purpose is unclear, but may have been used during parades down the terrace.

SANY4311

Some of the towers are badly damaged.

SANY4321

Princess made freinds with this Horse.

SANY4326

We came back past Bayon temple where our driver was parked up, and headed onward.

SANY4336

This is another entry gate behind us, with more statues lining the road.

SANY4340

The motorbike dutifully towed us around.

SANY4342

The waterways were very beautiful.

SANY4350

The purpose of the moats is disputed. Some claim irrigation, but there is little evidence for it, and many suggest its was for its asthetic.

SANY4357

We wandered through this temple.

SANY4359

Buddha was well adorned inside.

SANY4364

The little girl was selling postcards outside our next site visit, Ta Prohm.

SANY4374

This site had the macguyver solution applied until a tidier one is found.

SANY4382

Although poorly aligned, the original carvings must have looked spectacular.

SANY4386

More stop-gaps for a collapsing ceiling.

SANY4388

The pile of rocks behind the bars are from the roof.

SANY4391

Stay out of that one!

SANY4406

We are near the center with the temple on the right.

SANY4407

The trees have really got a hold around here.

SANY4415

Look at that tree consume the wall!

SANY4436

This temple is besieged wth growth, the big ones are silk-cotton trees.

SANY4427

Princess demonstrates the scale of this tree.

SANY4425

Another Jenga pile.

SANY4429

It must be hard for archieologists to reassemble.

SANY4438

The vines are also claiming their pieces.

SANY4439

Amazing how long these trees have had to worktheir way in.

SANY4442

That looks mostly standing.

SANY4444

these roots are the hight of that wall.

SANY4453

Another ceiling that failed.

SANY4454

This tree has grown over the building, which is over 2 stories high.

SANY4457

Another tree eating a wall.

SANY4458

Some areas were getting active restoration and repair, which must be hard, slow work.

SANY4467

Our next stop was at Ta Keo. The Temple has 5 levels, each filled with sand and soil. The lowermost level is approx 80mx60m.

SANY4470

We headed on in the first gate to be confronted with this steep staircase.

SANY4472

On the first level is a lower courtyard.

SANY4473

We kept on going; 3 sets shown above.

SANY4482

Princess resting at the top.

SANY4481

This top Temple is 22 meters above ground level.

SANY4488

Inside is a shrine for Shiva, with Buddha as his right-hand-man. The whole Temple was dedicated to Shiva.

SANY4490

The toursits make their way down carefully.

SANY4479

The site is not as decorated as others. Legend has it that the site was struck by lightning, which was taken as a bad omen so the sites work and refinement ceased.

SANY4477

We headed back down throught the series of gates and stairs.

SANY4489

Hold on Princess!

In the next post, we'll visit the main Temple; Angkor Wat.
